  1. As laid out, the first and second parts of your question do not fit together very well. Yes, algae and fungi are used in scientific experiments _but_ the vast majority of experiments are not designed to produce anything per se (other than results that address the hypotheses laid out at the beginning of the study). That is, researchers use species in these groups to test all kinds of hypotheses about patterns and processes in ecology, evolution, development, etc. Therefore, it is hard to make general statements about what these very different taxa "produce" in these very different types of studies.
