Question:

Are all Blu-ray discs 1080p or the movie's original aspect ratio?

For example, Pirates of the Caribbean's original aspect ratio is 2.35 : 1.

If I rip the movie from Blu-ray, does the aspect ratio stay the same 2.35 or it will be Bluray's 16 : 9 with two black bars?

Does all the uploaders have to crop that black bar before uploading movie, to make the file smaller?? Or when they rip the movie, the aspect ratio is 2.35 and they don't have to crop anything, just encode then upload it??

Thanks a lot!!!

  1. no it depends on the machine used to watch them. some machines are only 720 and have a lesser quality picture, but to be honest i have seen both and the difference is not as big as i thought it would be (ie televisions/blu ray players etc), i presumed the difference would be great but i could live with a 720 machine over a 1080 any day.

  2. You are confusing two things. First blu ray doesn't have an aspect ratio, it's the ratio of HD as a standard. Movies shown on a widescreen TV via blu ray, shot in 2:35:1 will have tiny black bars top and bottom.

Movies shot in 1:85:1 and some TV shot wide in 1:78:1 will fill the screen.

The aspect ration won't change no matter how you rip it, unless you have some software to change it. And when it changes, the image will be cropped and look different if it were even possible.  I'm not a big ripper/uploader so I can't offer much info there.
