All single layer DVD-R hold 4.7 Mb. There is also a dual layer DVD (DVD-R DL) that will hold 8.5 GB of data.

If you are recording on your computer you can use a program like DVD Shrink to reduce the file size and get more on a DVD.

If you are recording on a free standing DVD most have 2 hour 4 hour and 6 hour recording modes.

you set the dvd record speed, 1 hr, 2 hr some are 6 hr or 8 hr.  That tells you how many shows will fit.
