Question:

Are all Digital Converter Boxes able to convert an HD signal?

Specifically, at Cincinatti's channel 9, they are sending an uncompressed HD signal over the air, and I know someone who is unable to display that signal through their converter box, onto an old TV in Hamilton, Ohio.

(also having trouble with 9, 22, and 7)

Thanks!

  1. I have to assume that the signal can travel to Hamilton... right?  Can you check to see that this old tv can get channel 9 regularly?

  2. Don't confuse HD and digital.

All digital converter boxes can receive the different resolutions under ATSC, including 1080i and 720p, the more common forms of HD. The digital box downconverts the HD signal into 480i, which your old TV can handle.

What's probably happening is that you can't get the signal because of signal strength. Check antennaweb.org to see what stations are in your reception area. Find a better antenna, orient it towards Cincinnati, or bite the bullet and subscribe to cable.
