I read somewhere that they don't believe in killing animals, but I thought they ate meat...or am I thinking of a different religion?

  1. Some jewish people keep kosher, which means that they eat food that has been specially blessed and is considered "clean."  They also keep separate sets of dishes for meat products, and they do not mix other foods on these dishes.

Jewish people consider animals with cloven hooves to be unclean, and thus not kosher.  That is why they do not eat pork.

  2. We even eat meat on Fridays.

  3. You're definitely thinking of some other religion.  Jews have very specific laws how food - including meat - is to be properly handled.

  4. No. Most Jewish people eat kosher things, and pork is not kosher. Usually Hindus or Buddhists are vegetarian, because killing anything is not very good... although in the Hindu Caste system you need butchers, etc.

Oh yes, and Jainism. Even thinking harmful thoughts is discouraged in Jainism.

  5. I think you're thinking of Hinduism, although it's hard to tell based on what you said

  6. you are probably thinking of jainism not judaism

  7. Jews celebrate Passover.  The Bible clearly defines how Passover is to be celebrated, including the COMMAND to obtain a young sheep or goat, and specific instructions on how to slaughter, cook and eat it.

  8. The laws about kosher meat have been explained to you. Actually, as Jews in America disperse from urban population-centers and away from neighborhoods with kosher butchers, more and more Jews are becoming vegetarian. It's an easy way to observe kashrut (the dietary laws) without the expense and trouble of obtaining kosher meat, and the effort of maintaining a kosher kitchen (two sets of dishes etc.)

So no,  not all Jewish people are vegetarians,  but one can see why you might think so.

  9. Tomorrow, go get some kosher corned beef on rye.

  10. You must be thinking of different people.  While some Jews are vegetarian, that isn't an explicit aspect of the faith.  There are restrictions about what animals can be eaten, how they are to be killed and prepared, and so on; but they most certainly do eat meat.

You might be thinking of Bhuddists; most are non-violent as a matter of faith, and strive not to harm any living creature.

  11. They believe in killing an animal in the most humane way possible.

*That* is what kosher means.  To answer the misconception above, a rabbi inspects places to make sure that they are doing it correctly, but there is no blessing involved whatsoever.

  12. You are thinking of Buddhism
