Salam Alikom

Well I saw many breastfeeding moms in Jerusalem who fast during Ramadan.

So when are they full exempted from fasting? and do they have to re-fast those days?

  1. these poor muslim women dont have enough food during other times of the year let alone Ramadan.

    Religion breeds stupidity

  2. The rulings of the Scholars of Hanafi Mazhab is given below:-

    (i) The Hanafi madhhab

Al-Jassaas said in Ahkaam al-Qur’aan, 1/244, after quoting the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him): “Allaah has relieved the traveller of half of the prayer and of the duty to fast, and He has relieved pregnant and nursing mothers (of the duty to fast).”:

It is known that this concession – granted to pregnant and breastfeeding women – is limited to cases where they fear for themselves or for their children.

    He also said (1/252):

Either pregnant and breastfeeding women will themselves be harmed by fasting or their children will be harmed. In either case, not fasting is better for them and fasting is not allowed in their case. If fasting will not harm them or their children, then they have to fast and it is not permissible for them to break the fast.

    It says in al-Bahr al-Raa’iq (2/308):

If pregnant and breastfeeding women fear for themselves or their children, they may are allowed to break the fast in order to ward off any hardship.

i.e., they may break the fast so as to ward off harm… but this is restricted to cases of fear, i.e., when they think that is most likely to happen… because if they do not fear harm there is no concession granted to them.

But, the women have to make up the fast (re-fast) after Ramadan.

  3. Dear sister in Islam,

As regards a suckling mother or a pregnant woman, if she is worried lest fasting should harm her, the majority of jurists are of the view that she is allowed not to fast.

In his answer to the question posed, Dr. Muhammad M. Abu Laylah, professor of Islamic studies and head of the English Department, faculty of languages and translation at Al-Azhar University, states:

“Dear sister in Islam, if there is any harm to your baby if you stop breast-feeding him during the daytime or during the fasting hours, then you are allowed to break your fast and make up for what you miss of fast days whenever your circumstances allow.

This rule is based on the fact that Islam cares about the health of the children as well as protecting them against any harm or disease.

Bear in mind that you should translate the moral lessons of fasting into practice. Try to serve the fasting people and share the religious activities of Ramadan with them.

Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in a hadith reported by Salman Al-Farisi: "If any one provides a fasting person with an Iftar meal, Allah will forgive his sins, and save him from h**l-fire (in the Hereafter), and he will have a reward equal to the fasting person without reducing the reward deserved for him." Some Companions said: “Not all of us can afford to give an Iftar to a fasting person. The Prophet, then remarked: "Indeed, Allah gives such great reward to any one who provides Iftar to a fasting person even if it is a date, a sip of water, or a jar of milk…”

  4. Wassalamu alaikum warahmatullaho wa barakatuh my dear sister Sara Bella. Yes all breast feeding moms have a right to be lightened of fasting during ramadan if it(fasting) will harm their babies .Usually if the baby is 6 months old or  below it is suggested for no fasting but if the baby is more than 6 months the mother can fast because her baby can have another meal not only breast milk Their fasting are not exempted because they should replace it after the month of ramadan

with the same number of days they were not fasting just like you broke the fasting during you have a monthly period. It is regulated in the hadits of Muhammad pbuh as written in the book of hadits by Imam Bukhari.

  5. Leave me some breast milk.

  6. whatever the type of fast, Fard or Sunnah if someone break it, they should be made up.

as for Jerusalem, not only the land is blessed, but also its people.

  7. As-Salamu `alaykum! I am a mother of a one-year-old child, still breast-feeding. Should I fast? My concern is that he doesn't drink cow's milk, so I really want to fast but am worried about my son too

    QUESTION

Please assist in clarifying the following question:

Should a woman who is breast-feeding be fasting?  Does the right of the

nursing baby supersede the mothers' wajibaat of fasting?

My mujtahid - Ayatullah Syed Ali Seestani

    ANSWER:

    1. Among the list of the persons exempted from fasting during Ramadhan is a

woman who is pregnant or breast-feeding her child -- no matter whether the

woman thinks that fasting would harm her own health or that of the child.

    2. However, such a woman has to do the qaza after the child-birth or after

    the breast-feeding is over.

    3. It is also wajib on such a woman to pay fidya: to pay at least 750 grams

of flour or rice per day to a poor s**+`a Ithna `Ashari. (Note: fiday is

    different from kaffara.)

  9. As Salaam to you all,

In reply to your question, all breastfeeding women are exempted from fasting during Ramadan. However, the new born takes precedence over the much older well nourished child. For example the normal breastfeeding period is just two years, so a woman who is breastfeeding over this period should fast, for the child would not be at risk. If the child is over one year and on a supliment bottle feed as well as the breast, then the woman should be able to fast.

It is all a question of what harm would come to the child or mother as to when one should fast or not. All Fard fasts must be made up if lost, while fasts which are carried out for one's own pleasure to Allah (SWT) do not. Although if one has given one's word the night before as an intention to fast the following day to Allah (SWT), is it not best to keep to it?

    Wa Salaam.

  10. Yes, they are. The hukum is wajib.

  11. Fasting is not required for breastfeeding mothers as it is known to decrease the amount of breast milk and affect the quality of its constituents, so you don't have to fast and you are doing a great job breastfeeding your baby.
