My friend has a kitten for me and she said she doesn't have a tail.

The mother has a very small tail.

  1. no any breed could have had a problem and had to have its tail removed for health issues

  2. No, all breeds can produce kittens with no tails through a rare mutation.  Manx cats, the breed, have the mutation as part of their genetic makeup, so all are born without tails.

  3. it could be a manx or an American Bobtail cat

  4. I used to have a Manx.  They can either have a stub or no tail at all.  I wouldn't say that all cats without tails are Manx though, accidents happen you know.  : )

  5. A picture would help.

It might not be a Manx.

Some cats have to have their tails cut off.

But in this case, it probably is, since the mother is.

  6. no. this is a genetic mutation which shows up from time to time in other breeds, even mutt moggies. unless it has papers and a clear heritage, it's just a sweet tailless moggie cat. be on the lookout for potential hip and/or back problems as well as very painful arthritis in the tail as it gets older. while most of these cats are fine, cats with tail mutations can be prone to them, and your vet will be on the lookout for such problems. (some cats even need to have their stumps amputated in cases of severe arthritis.)

and for the record to those who don't know, a manx can come in three forms: rumpy (with no tail), stumpy (with a short tail, about an inch or so) or with a complete full-length tail. only rumpies are showable, so they are preferred, but any litter can have a mix of all three styles.

  7. Manx is the only breed that is tailless. Their tails can be tiny stumps to several inches long. But at any time if a tailed cat breeds with a tailless, the mix bred kitties could potentially inherit taillessness as well.

And of course unless you know the history of the kitten and its parents, it migth also be a deformation or even an injury which resulted in the tail having to be amputated.
