Is there some law that requires contractors to be drunks, rip-off artists, scammers, drug addicts, and constantly in the hole for money?

  1.   I agree w/ Sabrina and take mighty offense to you asking if we re all drunks and scum etc!!!!! You do your research and hire recommended people..You ll find some but to say it the way you do I take offfense I usually wish people GL on their questions they ask but not this time sorry..

  2. In my job, I work with contractors & all sorts of people of the trades.  As with any group of people, there are the good and the bad.  There is an underlying feeling about contractors as you describe, but I want you to know there is hope!  I do have a pool of contractors, plumbers, electricians, painters, etc that are fair, honest, competent & wonderful tradesmen & women.  They would give you faith in them.  That being said, I tell my clients that out of everyone I do business with, there are only about 10-20% of them that I would recommend.  I hope things aren't too too bad for your situation, it can be very difficult to wade out of.  Make sure you have all your paperwork in order & call you local contractor's board if you have complaints.  Good luck!

  3. Sounds like you need to do a better job of targetting the good ones: i.e. not bottom-dollar people.

I've had the experience of a drunk guy taking my 200$ kitchen knife to replace the rubber seal of my very expensive terrace door, but I learned my lesson and only look for registered/recommended/quailfied people.
