Are all donations to non-profit organizations tax exempt?

  1. The only donations that don't count are donations to the government.  For example, a donation to pay down the Federal Debt is not tax deductible.

  3. No, just because an organization is non-profit does not qualify it to receive tax-deductible contributions.

    Except for government units and religious organizations, organizations generally have to receive written approval from the IRS before contributions they receive are tax-deductible.

    The IRS maintains a list of approved organizations.

    In addition, even though your donation may be made to an IRS approved organization, your donation is not tax-deductible under certain circumstances.  Examples are if you specify the donation for a particular person, if you personally benefit from the donation, if you specify the donation for a noncharitable use, and several other circumstances.
