Are all fruits and vegetables treated with 1-MCP including "organic" ones so they don't decay?

  1. I do not believe so.  1-MCP otherwise known as (SmartFresh) plays a trick on the ethylene action in fruits and vegetables by slowing down the decaying process .

    It is not used on all of our produce however It IS being used currently as well as experimentally.

    As of 2006, retailers are split on whether this quality enhancer should be used.

  2. 1-MCP stands for 1-Methylcyclopropene and it is approved for use to prolong the shelf life of apples.  Research shows it as promising on some other fruits like avocado and tomatoes, but has not approved for commercial use as of this date.  It is not being used on organic fruit or vegetables.
