Question:

Are all garbage disposals the same?

my disposal seemed to have burnt out and we are wanting to replace it but we are not sure if any disposal fits! is there a big difference?

  1. Most G/D are made by ISE and you can tell by the sink flange, it is metal and has three screws holding it in place. If the old G/D has a hole in the center bottom it is a ISE type G/D. If you buy a new ISE g/d you will find that it will take 15 minutes to change, you can use the old sink flange over without removing it from the sink. And the waste line will hook up with no problem. If you change brands the waste lines will need work and you will need to remove the sink flange.

If you've already got one, then why would you be worried about not being able to fit another one?  They all come with their own mounting kits, so unless you buy the exact same model you'll need to replace all that at the same time anyways.  Generally the bigger the disposal the better, but it really depends on what you normally use it for. If you're not grinding chicken bones on a regular basis you can get away with 3/4 horse or so, but get one that has the best warranty.  Insinkerator is a good brand.
