Question:

Are all memory cards equal?

I'm not talking about the amount of memory for the card. I'm wondering about the quality, which brand name should I look for? Or does it even matter?

  1. As long as the card has a name on it that you recognise they are all very similar. The only ones you should avoid are those with no brand name on at all. These are possibly quality control rejects, that's why they are so cheap.

When you get your card, put it in your camera and do a low level format, this will optimise the formatting on the card for your camera. Take a few unimportant shots and see if you can transfer them directly to your computer via the card reader. Delete these and take a few more. If everything is OK you should have no problems with the card. Faulty cards usually show up right away.

I have used both cheap and expensive cards in my cameras and have found absolutely no difference between them.

Extra info: Shops "own brand" cards can be very good value for money. If there is a problem they will exchange the card with no fuss (keep the receipt).
