  1. It takes very little battery power to start a moped, but if yours has failed, then why not try charging it before replacing it?

Some batteries are gel-type, but older ones are lead/acid and they can dry up for several reasons.

First, look at the battery top and see if it has removable caps. Check the fluid/acid  level inside.

If you see it is low in any part, top it up carefully with clean water, preferably distilled water. Pour slowly, as it will not hold that much, even if the level looks very low.

Once done, use a low-amperage charger, called a trickle charger. This will charge at the rate of two ampers per hour or less.   One amp/hour is ideal.

Connect the cables  Red to positive battery terminal, black to the negative, and let the battery charge overnight if it is a one-amp charger, four hours if two amps..

The battery should be fully restored.  If this does not work, you can buy a new battery at most automotive stores, or even Wally world.

Look at the battery itself before going to the store. It will have a code that describes the model.  It will be a combination of letters and numbers.  Note particularly which side the positive terminal is on, as batteries of the same size differ in where the terminals are mounted: some reverse the positions. The same model number will have a letter at the beginning or end that tells the dealer which side the terminals are mounted.
