  1. Poker is a reference to a five-card hand, consisting of ranks from high card to straight flush (some games allow for a five-of-a-kind).  There are many types of poker and they have different set of rules. There are also home variants that people play that are mainly confined to geographical areas.

Some games involve more skill than others. For example, the most popular poker game is currently Texas Hold'em, which requires a lot of skill but still has a decent amount of luck (at least in the short run). Games that involve a lot of wild cards, such as Baseball, tend to have a much stronger luck element.

  2. No.

There are a massive variety of poker games.

But essentially here are the differences:

The game itself.  Some have community cards, such as Hold'em or Omaha.  Some you have your own like draw or stud.  There are dozens of variations.

Some games have one main pot, some have a split pot such as Omaha H/L or Stud 8oB.

Some games aim for good hands like Hold'em, some like Razz are aimed at bad hands (which are good in Razz).

Some games are tournament games and of tournament games some are freeze out, some are winner takes all, and some are re-buy.

Of the cash games there are various stake levels and rules surrounding buy ins and cash outs.  Some games have blinds only, some have antes only, some have both.

So as you can see, there are a ton of variations.

  3. No, there is the impression from television that all poker is "

Texas-Hold'em" but there are actually many versions of poker , the common element being that it's a money-management and betting game with stages so that bets can be made at different stages. Examples are:  5-card stud, 7-card stud, 5-card draw, High-Low versions of each, the user of "jokers", etc.
