  1. Yes, that's the standard for most tests and pencil companies.

  2. Yes.  The only places they're going to sell non-#2 pencils are places you'd only go to get pencils if you were specifically looking for non-#2 pencils (and knew where to go). :)

  3. Yes

  4. mostly, except for some of them which are sold at craft stores

  5. most of'm

  6. No, a #2 pencil must have #2 printed on it. The #2 defines the lead strength inside the pencil (although no longer really lead). It also defines the "weight" of the stroke which is why it is required for testing. generic pencils can range widely from #2 so always be sure your pencil has #2 lead for a test.

  7. They are the most common.  The higher the number, the harder the lead.  I prefer 2.5 because they seem to break less often during sharpening, which seems to be a real problem with #2 pencils, especially low quality ones.

  8. Pretty much all pencils are #2.

If you are taking a scantron style test though, I would recommend sucking it up and getting pencils that specifically note "#2"; you don't want your entire test results messed up just because of that ever so slim chance your pencil isn't a 2.
