Question:

Are angelfish aggressive with each other? ?

I have 5 of them in a 100 gallon tank with 4 Australian Rainbow fish, a few platys and 3 veil tail black skirt tetras.

The fish are all relatively the same size, and do hold their own against each other (I don't see any bullying), but only the angel fish seem ragged.

Why?

The veil tails are just as lacy and finny as the angels, but they aren't raggedy.

Is there something to make the fins grow back?

I tried "googling" Angel fish care and the sites sucked. I'd appreciate a good one if you have them.

  1. Angelfish as you probably know, do tend to bully each other, and smaller fish if they can reach them.  Angels however are not the fastest moving of South American cichlids either, but they are not in a catagory of what I'd call peaceful.  I keep and breed Africans now, but before I got into Africans I did keep Oscars and Angels in seperate tanks.

I think a 100 gallon, which I have too for my Africans to grow out in, is a nice sized tank to keep these fish in.  That much space to have it sounds to me like you have a very dominant male starting to emerge.  If you really don't think it's the other fish nipping at them, the next thing I think to look at is your water chemistry then.  I know even many of us who keep and breed can get lax with care from time to time.  You may have over cleaned the mechanical filter too much and some nitrogen compounds are getting back in.  Maybe you missed some spots in the substrate, and some waste material got trapped, and something is taking hold in your tank.  There's a lot of different chances of something like this happening in larger tanks I've found.

So if you are not seeing any aggressive behaviour out of your stock, the next thing to look for is your water quality or pathogen in the tank.  What's your regular water change routine?

  2. Hi, I see your problem but its ALRIGHT!!!

Chilids are aggressive but I don't keep them I keep Discus fish which are way more troublesome then angels.

Well maybe the fin nipping is from your platys or Rainbows, Remove one of the species first and see if the fin nipping stops I'll check this question later and see if your still having problems

    Happy Fish Keeping

  3. you should only keep angle fish in even numbers. when kept in odd numbers one is more likely to be picked on.

as for the age and size that depends more witch ones are more willing to get right in there and eat. Most shy fish tend to get less food and this keeps there size down.

  4. Angels must be by themselves. Otherwise they will never mate with the othe tropical fish in ther. If you want them to mate.

All the other guys you have in the tank will nibble and eat  their fins.

so put the others in a tank by themselves or put a divider in the hundred and keep them seperate.

    Thx for the prayers.

guess Thomas feels the same. Never seen them go un touched by other fish.  The fins always get eaten. I have had Oscars and chiclids and Koi all in a 100 gallon, so ya just never know who will get along anymore.

    I wish you luck.
