Are PRESCRIPTED anxiety pills bad for you? I have a bad anxiety problem and I got pills from my doctor for it. I was just wondering if there are long term affects that happen to you. It is only a temporary anti-depressant SOMEWHAT so i'm assuming that it does no harm?

  1. im not sure but if you really need them take it they have helped me and im not addicted to it

  2. The infamous answer: it depends.  Prescription anti-anxiety meds can be beneficial, but they can also cause side effects at low doses & when administered for a short time.  Your doctor apparently feels that the benefits outweigh the risks.

Generally, short term, low dosage routines will minimize side effects in duration & degree.  Adhere to the doctor's protocol & log your response- sleep quality, mood, appetite, perceive improvement or worsening of symptoms, etc.

Generally, women experience more side effects than men (as estrogen can prolong the drug's half life, so it stays in your system longer).  However, as a man, I can vouch for having high sensitivity to medications, such that Paxil (an anti-anxiety med) induced agoraphobia (fear of people) in an otherwise social person, as well as worsening my insomnia.  If you have bad sleep, it may improve or worsen your sleep quality.  Also, if you take aspirin/acetaminophen or other types of medications on a semi-regular basis, you may find yourself less sensitive to a lower dose.

Hopefully, you'll have a smooth road & good results.  I wish you the best.

Are you asking about long term health problems, or particular diseases caused by the drugs (i.e. diabetes)?  Check the label for diseases or conditions known to arise from using said medication.  Those are *usually* infrequent (less than 3%) in order to get FDA approval, though the FDA may recall a drug as public usage increases & frequency of health problems become known.  The incidence of organic failure, Alzheimers, or hypothyroidism as a result of long term use is unknown., as pharmaceutical companies have not sponsored many of those types of studies.

  3. I can't say wheather or not these particular pills are bad for you. However, it is generally suggested that where anxiety disorder is concerned, natural treament, which does not require the use of medication is athe preferred option.

Medications tend to only offer temporary solutions, while natural methods can eliminate the disorder outright.

    Hope this helps..

  4. Depends what kind. Usually they are addictive, but you can be slowly taken off at some point and you won't have withdraws... most people you probably know are on them. They work. Give it a shot and if you have any concerns ask your doctor.
