  1. Yes, there are many pilots who hang out here, both general aviation and (ex) airline pilots.  I went to a state university that was close to where I grew up.  I did this so I could save a lot of money.  Embry Riddle is a fine school, but I think it is more on the waste-of-money side.  There is nothing there that you cannot learn at a local college and flight school.  Having gone there will not give you an edge over someone who didn't go to a big aviation university.

Airlines don't care about where you went to school, what your major is in and what classes you took at that school.  It's all about who you know.  I recommend that you go to a local, cheaper school and major in something that could lead to a good backup career.  Aviation is a very tough industry.  Many people don't make it and many are getting furloughed right now.

    Good luck.

  2. There are State Schools that offer Aviation Programs as well-for a helluva lot less than Embry_Riddle:

    University of North Dakota

    Oklahoma University

BYU may offer one as well, but that's not a State School...

To name two.  It would be much easier for you to get financial aid through these public schools than working with Embry-Riddle.  It would probably pay you to investigate their curricula.

  3. Hey there

I wanna become a airline pilot to iv bin dreaming all my life and i love planes like crazy,to give you some tips on piloting pretty much go to collage and study there you'll take courses like math ground school all about flying they will teach you everything, like people say be good at math, yes be good but they don't expect you do be SUPER jenuis but just be good at it and good communicating skills, other than that have fun flying and hope you become a pilot.

P.S If you love piloting try Flight Simulatour x Its a awesome practice trust me,Good luck

    Take care ;)

  4. I'm an not sure I recommend working for the airlines.  If you like dealing with politics and constant bickering about schedules and seniority then go right ahead.  I recommend going the corporate route.  Depending who you get on with you can make just as much money.  The people that I know that fly corporate have pretty comfortable lives.  The airlines are just too unstable right now, especially for someone who is just starting out.  You won't be making much money anyway and you will be making even less when they lay you off.

I went to Auburn University.  They have a great aviation program and it is ranked one of the best in the country.  Riddle is a good school, but don't think you have to go there.  There are other places you can go that are cheaper and Riddles flight school sucks.  A lot of Riddle grads have the big head and think way too much of them selves.  Like I said it is a good school, but don't let them make you think it is the only place to go for and aviation degree.

I decided I did not want to fly for a living and did more of the management side.  I do aviation insurance and I like it quite well.

Either way good luck with it.

  5. Do not become an Airline Pilot.

Do not listen to "Retired Pilots" because they have no idea of the bad turn Airline Management and Pilot relations have become today.  Airline Management has consistently reduced safety and pilot salaries

    for the past 20 years.

You will be paid 35,000/yr if you even make to the Major Airlines, where I am from.

Get paid according to the responsibility you have over other people's lives.

Doctors, Lawyers, Dentists, Investment Bankers, $300,000/yr.   Air Line Pilot  35,000/yr with 50,000 people's lives in his hand every day.

  6.   Hey. I am not a pilot but i have done a lot of research on pilot training. I am too passionate on being a pilot although the fees required are way too high me considering where i come from. (KENYA)

I however found out that Phoneix and Delta connection academy are passieved to the best in terms of facilities and school fees. Phoneix being affordable and delta with .good facilites, a nice training program and best chances of placement since its a susidiary of Delta airlines. good luck! carynben@yahoo.com

  7. There are a number of pilots who post answers on Yahoo!Answers, and also quite a few people who claim to be pilots but have never been closer to an airplane than the pages of Flying Magazine.

I recently retired from a 37 year career as a cargo pilot and then an airline pilot.

I have a PhD in physics from the state university in my state, which I finished before it was clear to me that I wanted the aviation career instead of the science career.  You don't have to have a PhD, obviously, to be an airline pilot, but you do have to have a 4-year college degree in some field.

There are people who post answers on here who will argue that you don't have to have a degree, but they are engaging in wishful thinking.  It used to be the case, and there are still senior pilots who did not go to college, but the airline hiring executives are not talking to anyone but college graduates now.

I did all my flight training at local airports with local instructors, right up through the Air Transport Pilot.  That is the way I recommend, rather than going through a "package" education program.

Embry-Riddle is a fine school, and you might do very well there.

  8. I have heard the glory days of the commercial pilots are over they are forced into situations they shouldnt be at pay rates that sound to be dwindling I love flying but you couldnt pay me enough to do it commercialy. now on the other hand the manager at our local airport talks very lovingly about his carrer in the big jets I would do some major research on this subject before getting to far into a very very costly goof. it sounds like far more fun to fly GA when and how you feal like then to do it for a job I used to think it would be a great job also now I just want my cessna 150
