I never thought that it was a really big problem until I actually became a server and recieved a few bad tips. Then i get onto Y!A, and i find out that a few people don't even believe in tipping!! whats wrong with you guys!! serving is a stressful, and fastpaced job!! You have to deal with people being rude and talking down on you, getting really particular with their orders, and then go into the kitchen and sometimes coax the cooks to make it the way that the stupid people wanted it!! and then you have these stupid people thinking that you are doing nothing, and that don't believe in tipping...i wish that everyone could be a server at least once in their life. that way they would know how hard everything is. Maybe they would start respecting it a little more!!!

  1. I got a quarter Christmas Eve from a guy bragging about the $42,000 car he just bought.

Popsfav- Cooks are MEAN Cranky guys that are busting their *** in bad conditions and dont give a c**p about MY tip. This is the first time in 20 years I've had a good relationship with my chef.

EVERYONE should wait tables once. It should be a law.

  2. Mad is not the correct word....I just don't understand how people can be so freaking rude and dumb! And it's not my fault that you drink your diet coke at record speeds I will get you another one asap...after 8 or so diet cokes aren't you bloated?! I love it when people ask for something we don't have and are shocked when I tell them we can't make that for them...I work in a fine dining steak house and NO we don't have sweet tea or can we get you a club sandwich! We have steaks and lobsters, I am not your sandwich artist.

I definitely think everyone should be a server once!

  3. You said it sister!!

But please know that the good ALWAYS outweighs the bad and that it all balances out by the end of the week/month.

Never let the customer see you sweat, be cool and just do your job, you're not there to be abused and ignore those who make you feel that way.

  4. I think this is true for retail positions as well, if someone doesn't work in food, they should work with clothes. Having customers want to get the best deal on their clothes when it's not about negotiating prices. And having people expect you to bend over backwards to get them fitting rooms, different sizes, help them put on the clothes, and then give them coupons when they didn't have one... the list goes on.

One thing I do know about me when I tip is that I take everything into consideration. Whether the waiter/waitress (or server) checks on me once in a while, do i have napkins and a full drink, is my food tasting ok and the way I ordered it. One of the hardest things about being a tipper is being fair. The other hardest thing is finding good service, being g*y it's sometimes hard to find someone who will serve me without bias. Being treated right, and just feeling like my server does care about me and how I am doing a little bit will cause me to tip more.

I usually tip within a 15-25% range. My girlfriend on the other - hand who is a chef and knows food - is a very hard woman to please and I usually have to convince her to tip more than she wants.

There are many factors when deciding on a tip. Both parties should learn to think of the other person before they tip so hastily.

  5. Having been a server, I can relate.  It sucks when you feel you've gone above and beyond, and didn't get anything extra in return.  However, tipping is only warranted when service exceeds my expectations.

Regarding the stress you feel.  Many people have that in their jobs.  If I mess up in my accounting job and report incorrect findings, my boss and company can be held criminally responsible...I'd say that is stressful, but I don't receive any tips when I do my job properly and accurately.

  6. People who don't tip are obviously ***** who have never been a server. It takes a lot of energy and intelligence to do a good job. We also have NO CONTROL over when your dang food is going to come out so stop taking it out on us.

Most rude customers have absolutely no idea how restaurants work.

Edit: Popsfav is a *** and obviously has never held a serving job. If you are too much of d**k to be able to remind your server whether you had DIET coke or regular coke then you have issues and I'm glad I've never served you.

  7. It's not whether you are outright rude to them or not- it's your poor attitude they are picking up on.  Saying things like, " then go into the kitchen and sometimes coax the cooks to make it the way the STUPID people want it."  With that attitude, I am sure they see right through you!  A tip is called a tip because it is for EXTRA, above normal service. That is YOUR JOB- to communicate w/ the cooks, since the customers can't, as to how the customer wants their food.  What makes the customer stupid?? They are paying for it, not you.  Yes, I have been a server and can't recall EVER not being left an excellent tip.  What you are forgetting is that you ARE a SERVER.  Your JOB is to SERVE.  Get over your "stupid customer" attitude if you want tips.  Knock your self out!  It's not that hard.  You have to read people.  Some don't want you chatting, some want you invisible.  Some want you to laugh it up with them, etc.  Never forget, that while your table is waiting on you to bring their food, they often watch how you interact with other customers and if you complain to other servers, etc.  Personally, if I hear a server complain about a tip another table left, I don't leave one for her either.  I don't spend good money to go out and eat and have to listen to the servers whine. I've also heard servers ask when doing a drink refill, if it was regular or diet, etc.  How hard is that to remember???  Jot it down if you have a lousy memory.  You should also maintain an excellent relationship w/ all of the cooks, then no coaxing is needed.  You work as a team. Also, you are going to have a rough life ahead if you can't handle serving.  You will deal with "stupid people" in any job you have, as you are obviously not a people oriented individual.
