  1. they suck, nothing beats a good old fashioned flashlight.

  2. Like any tool you have, they are only as effective as the person using it.

  3. They are effective enough.

  4. Have one that has nails hammered through it. That should help with violent, drunken gangs. Or issue chain whips instead.

  5. a blow to the head is considered deadly force, and a blow to the knee or elbow will result in broken bones. i believe they are effective enough

  6. They're certainly effective provided one has proper technique.  Also remember that heavier might carry more inertia, but will move through the air slower and take more strength to swing.  It's better to land a lighter hit than miss with a heavy one.

Their primary advantage is that they are much easier to carry being collapsible.  Therefore, you are far more likely have them on you if you are attacked by someone.

Good old solid wood (waxwood or ash) walking sticks are good too, being longer, legal and carried in plain sight.

  7. Although club head speed counts, the hardest blow is the result of weight/mass of the baton.  Ergo, the heavier the better for getting someone's attention.

  8. verry effective.

your best bet is not to get cought.

well i guess it also depends on the strenght given in the force. :D

    ouch....:P

  9. I'm assuming you're talking about the expandable 16" or 24" straight steel batons.

It depends on how well you're trained with each of them (ASP vs PR-24 vs straight baton vs collapsible PR-24). The advantage of the ASP is the size, and it does provide a decent amount of striking power. The standard PR-24 has much better striking power but is more unwieldly for normal carrying - much like the standard straight baton. For that reason, I prefer the collapsible PR-24. It weighs a little more than the standard PR-24, but has all of the other benefits.

It all depends on what you're trained with and how often you practice.
