Question:

Are audio amplifiers becoming worse?

I have a few old Amplifiers which have large transformers and MOSFET outputs. I feel their quality is much better than the newer "Amplifier chip" output Amps. The old Amps produce a sharp base and a very clear sound. The specs on the new ones seem great but when you listen to them they sound dull and muffled. Any idea why we are moving away from the good old MOSFETS? Who still makes MOSFET Amps with output rated in RMS?

  1. Today - receivers are all about video switching, Sat radio & iPod connections, un-compressed HDMI audio processing, syncing with your computer, etc.

The sheer power output has fallen away as being the more important thing.

In truth - compressed 5.1 sound does not need huge power output or highly-sensitive speakers. Sat radio sounds hollow and MP3's have large variations in sound quality depending on codec.

It's strange - what sounds good on earbuds/headphones does not work well on the full-sized tower speakers.

Look into the Yamaha "High Current" receivers. They still do a decent job. Or look into a pre-amp system where you can add your own outboard amps.

Check out www.outlawaudio.com for a internet company that does modest pre-amp systems.
