Are bags searched when using european rail systems?

are there bag checkers or metal detectors when you get on a train in europe?

Only on Eurostar trains between London and Paris/Brussels, as far as I'm aware.

On other services there may be occasional random searches (spot checks), but passengers are not searched routinely. It simply wouldn't be practical to search every passenger.

nope. Perhaps in some High speed lines. But not for regular intercity trains. It would be impossible to check that in every station
