  1.   Yes and no.  Betta can do well in a bowl if they are kept in clean water, and kept warm (75-85F).  I'm not aware of many fish that can survive well in such conditions. (Paradise fish come to mind.) Still they do best in filtered tank.

They don't do well with other fish as they are a bit fragile.

  2. yes

  3. They are supposed to be I kept a couple of females in a unheated unfiltered fish bowl for ages before I knew any better, but then I have had a few die when kept in a lovely warm community tank.

So I don't know what are the main factors that allow some to live for ages in appalling conditions while others cark it easily even in a tank that seems very suitable.

  4. Yes, IF you care for them properly.  This means giving them a 2.5 gallon or larger tank with a heater and keeping the water very clean.

  5. Yes, they will tolerate cruel treatment that fish would die in a day for for longer periods of time, but that doesn't mean that because of that they should be condemned to slow deaths by the common "betta" tank setups most people give them.

  6. I'll tell you a secret. I never set out to get a betta. I acquired my betta because my local Wal-Mart had a shipment of the beautiful little things sitting on their shelves in awful, tiny plastic cups and I felt horrible for them. I tried to ignore them, but after they sat there for a week and a half, I broke down and got one, complete with a ten gallon tank and all the trimmings. I knew there was a chance he wouldn't survive or would have health problems being from the notoriously filthy Wal-Mart, but I felt like I had to save him. 7 months and 9 days later, he's my bud and is healthy and happy.  So yes, with some care, they're hardy little aquatic souls.
