Please what reason will account for the long alimentary canal found in birds?

  2. Yes.  Two reasons.  Vertebrae means backbone, which birds have.  Also birds are chordates.  Which is a reference to the spinal chord.

    Yes birds are vertebrates.

    They are vertebrates because they have a backbone, or vertebral column.  The two "main" classifications of all animals is are they vertebrates or invertebrates.  Vertebrates being Mammals, Birds, Fish, Reptiles, and Amphibians.  Invertebrates being all the Arthropods (insects, crabs, lice, etc), Mollusks (snails, slugs, clams, squid, etc), Worms (earthworms, tape worms, etc,), single-celled creatures (amoeba, volvox, etc,) and  Jellyfish, etc, etc.

    The long alimentary canal is due to the long necks and the fact that birds have a crop "before" the stomach, I believe.
