No, try swimming in board shorts, too much drag. They're more about looking cool. Swimming shorts are shorter, lighter.

Board shorts generally have a snap and a zipper. and ussually not lined.

Boardies don't work good for lap swimming. Briefs or jammers are for lap swimming. I am not trying to pass a gang initiation, so "gang banger" boardie shorts are not for me.

Board shorts - are like cargo pants, and are commonly used at the beach.

Swim shorts - they're tight. There are many variants, including the knee-length jammers, the legskin which look like full trousers, and those which look like briefs.
