Question:

Are braces worth it if you don't *really* need them?

My teeth are not horridly crooked, in fact they're relativley straight, if not a little crowded down the bottom and on the sides. My biggest problem is that one of my front teeth is a bit too foward. Anyway, my dentist told me if I get them, I'll have to wear them for about 18 months. So is it worth the time and the pain? It's difficult to get an honest answer from dentist, because he would obviously want the money, but he does say that they will move in the future.

  1. depends if that one tooth, or some other one, if actually affecting any of the other teeth in your mouth. thats why i got braces, like you i had pretty much straight teeth with the odd one on the top or bottom, but one was slowly pushing in its neighboring tooth. so i got braces

and yes- it was definetly worth it !!!! (my ortho also told me id need them for as long as you)

they fixed things that i ddint even know were wrong with my teeth! its really amazing, what they can do.

its tought to tell without a picture, but one things for sure, if you get braces your teeth will be perfectly straight and you will LOVE them. youll consider them your best, or one of your best features. youll be glad you did it.

also, if you have an overbite/underbite, braces will also fix that for you too. if you still have trouble deciding, youll have to sort this out more with your ortho or dentist/

    good luck!

p.s. pain isnt unbearable or anything, you get used to it and how to handle it...and yes it does take alot of commitment to go to appts and stuff and to care for the braces, but its all worth it in the end!

  2. When i got My braces 1 year ago they were like bothering me so much for the 1st week but then I just forgot about them as you get used to them, It only hurts a little bit when they change your wires (mine is once a month) for like 1 or 2 days, but not that much , it is worth it and will make you have a nice smile, go for it. Some Dentists don't always go for the money,  one dentist turned down my father when he wanted braces.

  3. I think you'll be happy that you took the time to straighten your teeth. When you smile your teeth are either a wonderful focal point or a terrible distraction. Some people notice teeth that are a little bit crooked more than others. but more importantly than what other people notice or think is how you'll feel when your teeth are nice and straight. it's a lot like having just put on your best outfit, your makeup is fabulous, your hair is done awesome--it doesn't matter what happens--you can handle it! It just feels good! Kinda like knowing when you smile that your teeth are bright and clean. And of course a dentist is going to tell you that you should do it--but both from the standpoint of the money AND how you'll look and feel when it's done.

  4. my sons teeth were in good shape he had one tooth that was turned a little, that was all that i thought was wrong until the otho dentist did impressions and we saw there were problems i could not detect, i insisted he go into braces, he was madddddd! but after 18 months, very little discomfort (just at the time of adding spacers) he is soooo glad he did, he was a beautiful smile, and not all dentist are after the money, in fact the dentist i work for told me he needed them.
