Are bright green snakes poisonous?

I saw a bright green snake in my front yard and don't know if it is poisonous. It was about 18 inches, very thin, moves very fast, and bright green all around.

I live in Georgia, so if you could help me, that'd be great!

  1. It was a Rough Green Snake. They feed on insects and spiders. They are not VENOMOUS. All of the Venomous snakes in Georgia except one have distinctively Large heads. The exception is the Coral Snake which can be easily identified because it has red, yellow, and black bands around it's body. Coral Snakes are distinguished from Milk and King Snakes by the sequence of the colors. Red and yellow bands touch on Corals and red and black bands touch on Milks and Kings.

  2. sounds like it might be a Rough Green Snake, (http://www.uga.edu/srelherp/snakes/ophae... which is not poisonous, according to this site (http://timberrattlesnake89.tripod.com/ga...

    so you should be okay

if that's not it, check out these snakes:

  3. Green snakes are no more poisonous than the ripe ones.

  4. I grew up in Massachusetts and used to catch the green snakes when I was a kid. We used to call them grass snakes. They were easy to handle and did not bite. I haven't seen one for years.

  5. It sounds like a tree snake. I normally just call them green snakes. They are really skinny and bright. And they are not poisonous. Oddly they are pretty nice. Like if you pick one up you probably wont get bitten. I pick them up all of the time and I have never been bit. They are really neat, they will wrap around your arm and just stay there until you pull them off.

I don't recommend you pick it up if you haven't done it before.

  6. The one you saw isn't

It is either a smooth green snake or a rough green snake

    both harmless

  7. If you're in North America and looking at a wild green snake, it is not venomous... rough green snakes and smooth green snakes are the only mostly bright green snakes we have.

  8. I assume you mean Georgia, USA.

The only poisonous snakes in the continental US are rattlesnake, copperhead, water moccasin, and coral snake, none of which are bright green.
