  1. Although no building is going to stand-up to a tornado without damage the chances of getting hit by one are really small because tornadoes are relatively rare events and the area of destruction is small.  Hurricanes however are big storms that can cause a lot of damage.  Given that the coastal regions of America are heavily developed, the chances the a whole lot of people are going to find their nice beach houses destroyed is pretty good.

  2. no, most buildings in those regions are built to withstand such force.

  3. I should hope not.  I live in "tornado alley" and believe me we have buildings every where, in fact my home is a building.

What do you want the people to do -- move out of the areas affected?

Ok that being the case, move everyone away from earthquake area.

Oh come on get real, obviously you don't live in either region and have absolutely no idea what you are asking.

  4. No. That word is used to describe species which are endangered by man made actions or inactions. Buildings are made made structures. They can be better designed to withstand tornadoes and earthquakes etc.

  5. obviously regular buildings are ,But people who live in consistant abuse by the Environment tend to build with that in mind .

At least those who can afford it .

In Mexico which has a lot of earth quackes and even more tremors (where I am it is very regular ,

the buildings use very strong cement a lot of iron reinforcing and pillars every 3 meters, very exessive compared to other places in the world ,but we had a short series of very strong tremors a month ago and the poor houses cracked open ,the tiles came of the roofs ,but the concrete boxes remained undamaged ,

the thing they havent got right yet is that they are very hot ,and people spend most of the time under their palmleaved thachings in the garden than in the hot houses.

I am into Permaculture ,in the Permaculture design Manual,(by Bill Mollison) are some designs of bamboo houses for hurricane prone areas ,these houses are cheap .flexible and cool

    but not burgler proof

you should check them out .

two basic pilars anchored deep into the ground and a crossbeam ,the rest of the house structure is on top of this in such a way that it can slide some either way .and so making the house flexible ,in strong winds ,

Almost the same principle as the coconut palms waving in to the wind with out breaking.

so the secret is movement that absorbs large forces
