Are built-in Halon systems street legal?

Hi there!

The engine swap for my mid-engined sports car that is nearing completion, but I'm always think of "what it?", so to be ready ahead of time I was thinking of installing a Halon Fire Surpression Sysytem in the engine compartment. I figure with it being in back, there's no chance of the gas getting into the cabin, but are these systems street legal?

Thanks in advance!

  1. Yes no one would have to know until maybe the EPA found out that you are using this product and that you have no training as well.

  2. dont some top of the range sports cars have somthing similar fitted?...anyway if it is illigal i would rather get a slap on the wrist then get burned to death..wouldnt you?

  3. no one has to know. but i doubt it would get through emissions testing. maybe you should find out on a trusted website.

  4. I don't see why that would be a problem.  Just make sure it's an approved container and has been installed in accordance with manufacturer specs.  They are installing suppression systems in the police vehicles and already have them in the buses in and around Cleveland, Ohio.

Halon is not illegal, it's just that the gas is not manufactured anymore because it's an ozone depleter.  It may be hard to get or get recharged.  You may want to consider a system using FE-36, FE-227, or FM-200 (all viable Halon replacements.)
