Question:

Are bunkbed mattresses different than regular mattresses?

We bought our son a set of bunkbeds and I thought that I have heard of bunkie boards (do those take the place of boxsprings or something?) and someone else told me I needed a special mattress. I guess bc I've never owned a set before I don't know? It is twin over twin, so we were just set to look for two regular twin mattresses.

  1. Yeah, Most bunkbeds use standard twin mattresses. But they don't usually come with a boxspring. When you get the bed in it should have a support(such as heavy-duty plywood) to be put in place already for the mattress to just be put on top of.

  2. Any bunk bed I've ever slept on uses a standard Twin mattress. No difference.

Even if there was, I'm sure you could change it to your liking.

  3. You can use regular twin mattresses.   You can also buy thinner foam type mattresses.    When I bought my first set of bunkbeds last year, I had to run back to the store and buy 'bunky boards' because my bunkbed set didn't have them.  Bunky boards do take the place of boxsprings.  They are just  thin, flat wood supports covered with fabric that you set your mattresses on.

I used regular twin mattresses because I already had them, but  I would rather have a thin bunk bed mattress on the bottom because my 4 year old can't even sit up in bed without hitting her head and it's a real pain changing the sheets on the bottom bunk. At least the thinner mattress would give you a little more room between the top and bottom beds.
