Are callbacks good or bad?

Question

I always thought callbacks were to look at the people who were better and decide who got the role out of the better people, but now I've been hearing that the callbacks are just to reassess you. Which is true?

if you have been called back it means you are being considered for the role.

Directors are always short of time. They only bring back those they are interested in. It's a good thing, gives you another opportunity to get into the audition room!

It's not necessarily that they were "better" but more suitable for the role certainly. If you are dealing thru agencies, they only see people who are already known to be good actors in the first place. (Cattle calls would be a bit different of course.)

Both.  They're not going to waste their time seeing people again they don't think can do the part.  The auditions and subsequent callbacks are not about you, they are about the creative staff finding the actors they need to fit the roles they need to fill.

They are usually 100% mostly to look at the people who are excellent performers who are as talented as each other and make it hard to decide! They hardly need to take time to "re-assess" you. They would not waste their time calling you back to look at another performance of yours if they didn't think you had a sparkling potential! Directors want to spend as little time as possible to find the person they've been looking for so that they can get straight to business!

Think of it this way, if you went into an interview and you completely blew it why would they waste their time to take another look at you by calling you back?

Callbacks are good cause it shows that you have something that the director/casting director liked. Like they saw a spark that will put you right into the position of the role. Doesn't mean you will get the part but it is a good sign of starting off your acting career good luck =).
