where i live at least, car insurance for women cost 40%-50% less than for men. it also costs more if you are young....

i don't drive or anything, but i'm just curious why this isn't considered sexism, or racism. not a rant just looking for insight.

  1. can't you opt out of disclosing your gender?

  2. They base their rates on statistics.  They have found over the years that men that age tend to be in more accidents.  It isn't because they are sexist.

  3. Nope. You only have to read a basic book on statistics to understand their reasoning. Bottom line: young male drivers, statistically speaking, are a MUCH greater risk of causing a horrific accident involving injuries, deaths and multiple collisions/losses that young female drivers. It's as simple as that. It doesn't matter how good YOU drive you can't escape this fact about risk. After all, insurance is based upon spreading the risk among a large number of policy holders in order to reduce premium rates. It'll all get better when you hit 25 and can maintain a clean driving record.

  4. Do not take it for granted, use your own head to make the judgement. Here is a good resource I have tried.http://car-insurance.online-tips.info/ca...

  5. Rates are based on studies made by insurance people who study risks.  The people who are more apt to be involved in or cause accidents are charged more.  It is not sexist or racist.  (two very, very overused words)

  6. No.  They use actuaries and actuarial tables, which show them which groups of people have more accidents.  Sorry.  Welcome to the world.

  7. No, they're realistic.  Young men are one of the most likely groups to have accidents.  edit:  looked it up...young men are more likely to get into accidents than young women...but women as a whole are more likely than men as a whole.  But when men get into accidents they tend to be worse.

Typical female driver accident:  talking on cell phone while fiddling with a cup of coffee and not having a clue about the dimensions of her car, crushes the bumper of a minivan in a parking lot.

Typical young male driver accident:  Blasting down the freeway at 95 mph, hits a skunk, slips on the guts, spins out, and rolls, leaving bits of the car and its occupants over a quarter mile of road.

That's why they charge more.  The accidents are not only more numerous, but they do more damage.

  8. No because they have statistics to prove that males, especially younger males, have more claims than females. It might seem unfair, but nobody ever said life was fair.

  9. men are a bigger risk.

  10. men are more likely to get into accidents for some strange reason... i read somewhere they on average they drive faster and more aggressive so their rate of accidents is higher and with more damage.
