Question:

Are chains (for car tires) expensive?

I live in Oregon, and I'm going to be driving to Idaho next week to get my boyfriend. It'll be a 13 hour drive or so, and I'm probably going to be going over a few mountains with snow. I'm going to be renting a car because there's no way my vehicle can make the trip. So, my question, is how much would it cost to get chains on all four tires, (if necessary) or just two tires? If just two, do I put them on the back or front tires?

  1. rent an all wheel drive (AWD) you don't NEED a four wheel drive. there should be a nice vehicle at a reasonable price to rent. In cars most states don't make you hang iron with awd or fwd. I think you would want to mention chains to the rental company, they may get dizzy when they hear chains on their rental car. Chains for my semi are about $40 for a single rail (single tire)

  2. A set of snow chains can be purchased for $50-$100, depending on the size of the tires they are for and the material they are made of.

You want the chains hooked up to the tires which are doing all the work.

    Do not exceed 30 mph.

Try to avoid locking the wheels while braking, driving on bare pavement that's not covered with snow or ice, or hitting curbs, as these things will cause premature wear to the chains and ruin the tires.

  3. I wouldn't put chains on it because it limits how fast you can ( 20 to 30 mph) with it being 13 hours , plus your renting ,  wouldn't put chains on a car your renting. And there really only for really really deep snow ..but if you do get them usually they get put on the drive wheels so if its a front wheel drive car it gets put on the front.

  4. the smart thing to do is call your local state police and ask them what is required for your trip and that way you will be safe, and ask car rental place for an SUV.so no need for chains.if don't want SUV,ask them if they carry chains you could rent from them so you don't have to buy them.
