Are chemical peels dangerous?

my wife is thinking of getting one and i don't like the sound of it at all

Depends on the chemical, the concentration, and who's giving it.  They actually make over the counter peels, which are low-concentrations of alpha hydroxy acids (like glycolic acid) that are perfectly safe to use as long as the directions are followed; they only "melt" away the very top layer of skin.  Deeper peels - those using phenol or trichloroacetic acid (TCA) - will burn off more than just the top layer of skin.  This makes them more effective for hiding wrinkles, discoloration and scarring, but also a little more dangerous; they should only be administered by a dermatologist who has experience with chemical peels.  (Some states allow people other than physicians to administer them, so I'd advise your wife to be careful about choosing the person who gives her the peel.)
