Are chemical sprays, such as pepper spray, effective as non-lethal deterrants to dog attacks?

  1. Pepper sprays are VERY effective against dogs.  You don't even need to directly spray the dog, just spray in their direction as they approach ( up-wind if possible ) and they will get a good whiff of it and turn tail.

    Most sprays that are advertised as Animal Repellents are the same formula of pepper spray, they just have to be certified by the EPA to be safe for the environment.

  3. Yes, a mild pepper spray is what the postal service has been issuing mailmen for at least 45 years.

    Park rangers use a very strong pepper spray on bears to give them enough time to get away.

  4. Yes. I do believe they are effective deterrants to dog attacks. That is mainly why many postal workers carry this item with them everyday.
