  1. The quicker you get them on feed and water the better they will do.  You won't mess up his crop.  You should contact someone with chickens to see what to feed it.  The main thing you are worried about at hatch is dehydration and gut development.  By gut I mean intestines.  It is very important that the gut develop properly, and that you don't expose them to any bad bacteria or they will die.

  2. As soon as the chicks are dry and mobile (within 24 hours of hatching), they need access to water and food.

It's also helpful to put a weak solution of powdered vitamins (stress formula or a dextrose starter) into their water.  I dip their beaks to make sure they are drinking.  If you are hatching on a larger scale or ever have chicks shipped, adding some terrimyacin to the water is also helpful in preventing stress-related illness.

Chicks need a good starter chick feed and starter grit.  Grit is needed for proper digestion, as it collects in the crop and aids in breaking up their feed.  Not allowing them access to grit can cause crop impaction and death.

As your chicks hatch, move them to a heated brood pen as soon as they're dry and set them up with plenty of food and water.
