  1. most american chinese food are not healthy, unfortunately.

so call the sweet and sour (everything) is the fried meat stir fry with sauce and other stuff.

in order to survive and to please the local taste buds, many chinese cook modified dishes with heavy frying, salt, heavy sauce, large portion.  anything that fried first usually taste good, that's what, unfortunately, most americans like.

fried rice is generally okay and not too fattening.

  2. Fried food - including fried rice - isn't as healthy for you as grilled or steamed food due to the extra oil used in its preparation.

Also sweet and sour sauce usually has a lot of sugar in it from the pineapple juice and ketchup that it's made from (yup - those are the two main ingredients for American style sweet & sour sauce!)

That's not to say there aren't healthier choices...  Beef & broccoli isn't too bad, although the sauce is high in sodium.

  3. Well, define unhealthy....!  The dishes you named are not the best, but they still have positives... for example, chicken has protein, the sweet & sour sauce is made w/ ketchup which has lycopene, the fried rice has protein, veggies... Overall, those 2 dishes hit all the major food groups - carbs, protein, fruit (pineapple), veggies (in the fried rice), and fats.

Certainly not the healthiest meal, but I would still choose the sweet & sour chicken w/ fried rice over a double cheeseburger & fries & soda from McDonalds... if you are considering only nutritional value...

  4. you have to be careful b/c they have a lot of msg.  Panda Express is pretty good because they dont' use msg.
