Are clothes sizes getting smaller?

I went clothes shopping today & had to buy size 16, i'm a size 12 & have been the same weight for the past 15 yrs so how is it possible that all my old clothes are a size 12 & fit me but i couldn't get anything size 12 to fit me in the shop.
