Are clotted cream and sour cream the same thing? If not, how are they different?

I'm familiar with sour cream, being American and I'm curious about clotted cream.

  1. No there very different, sour cream is a mixture of whole milk, cream and milk solids, a bacterial culture like yougart, thickeners like guar and locust bean gums and ranges between 15 to 5% butterfat and then there is the dreck they call Fat free, which is horrible.

    Clotted cream or Devon/Devonshire cream is a high butterfat cream (35-40%) almost butter like and is use to top scones or other pastries at an English tea, it is not used for much else at all, it comes in small jars or bottle and is in some dairy case in the US, sour cream is available almost everywhere and has a shelf life of 1 -2 weeks, clotted cream is only good for a few days after opening and is not cheap, in Canada I have paid $3.99 for a 6 oz container.
