I've been wondering for quite a while whether to get comb spurs for my mare. i dont want proper spurs for her, but she does need that extra bit of help sometimes..

Are comb spurs really as "soft" on the horse as people say?

  1. Personally i dont like comb spurs, they can be a little harsh. I have a horse that has the same problem, and I use rounded dowls on him. They are very mild and remember to only use them as an aid reinforcement.

When you use spurs you first use your legs, seat and reins, if they still dont respond then you can use a little spur. But you whole goal is eventually not have to use your spurs. Hope this helsp!

  2. Personally, I do not like spurs at all. I have used them I think once in my life, and there is pretty much no difference between using them and not (at least for me).

I would say, try your best not to use them at all. It is more impressive that way as well. =] Good Luck.

  3. Why dont you use a dressage whip?

I have never heard of comb spurs but I would use Prince of Wale spurs instead.

The points come in varying lenghts (1/2 in and bigger).

  4. comb spurs?

  5. No.  not a good idea.  not soft.    Your comments are vague in that there is no explanation as to what "extra bit of help" means.  I presume you mean your horse has a problem with forward movement.  In that case, it would be recommended to help her with her engagement and impulsion.  A comment I would make about spurs, if you use them, they are for MOVING YOUR HORSE LATERALLY - NOT IMPULSION.  If your horse is responsive because you have trained her to lightness, spurs should not be necessary.  Training and communication is usually the key, not some mechanical device application.  Good luck with your decision.

  6. dont use them they are very hard on a horse if you ned a bit of helt than try using a crop
