The Knights of Labor organized the original parade on Tuesday, September 5, 1882 in New York City. In 1884 another parade was held, and the Knights passed resolutions to make this an annual event. Other labor organizations (and there were many), but notably the affiliates of the International Workingmen's Association, many of whom were socialists or anarchists, favored a May 1 holiday. In 1886 came the general strike which eventually won the eight-hour workday in the United States.

  1. You obviously don't know what Socialism is.  Nor do you know what socialism is.  These are also the same groups "who brought us the concept of the weekend".  Do some research before you open your mouth and remove all doubt...

  2. you're correct. but i have no problem sleeping in and later on throwing a steak on the grill.

  3. Well I guess it's fitting then that we all have a day off....b/c socialism certainly leads to less productivity.

  4. Funny how you celebrate work by taking a day off.

People should have to work 16 hours today to celebrate.

  5. Labor Day is a day to celebrate Worker's Rights, both Union and Non-union.  It is a day to appreciate those who suffered through the fight to get us 8 hour days, 5 day weeks, Holidays off, etc.  In general, it was the beginning of tolerable working conditions.  It marks the period when workers no longer had to accept being treated like slaves by their company owners.

  6. Are libs celebrating Labor Day??  Do they even know what labor is??

  7. Don't forget how much it costs the federal government to have a national holiday.  Maybe it's time to get rid of labor day.
