Are contact lenses harmful to the environment? if yes, in what ways do they harm the environment?

I doubt very seriously that they're a problem.  They're so tiny, and fall apart pretty quickly, that I find the possibility unlikely, especially as they have to be innocuous enough to put in your EYES.  The only way I can think of that contacts would be harmful is if the manufacture of the lenses produced waste or byproducts that were harmful to the environment.
