  1. yeah, just read over your question

  2. It depends on how well you look after them, if you stick to the wearing time schedule, and the general health of your eye...

Contact lenses can lead to eye infections should the lens come into contact with dirty water, even tap water - so make sure your hands are completely dry before you take them out and insert them. Not washing your hands before putting them in and taking them out can also lead to eye infections if there is bacteria on your hands.

Overwear of contact lenses (i.e. more hours than your optician has suggested - usually its no more than 12 hours a day, but it depends on the wearer) can lead to the eyes being damaged from a lack of oxygen, as contact lenses basically prevent oxygen levels reaching the cornea (the coloured part of your eye) - but nowadays this isn't such a big problem, as there are many new lenses with a high oxygen transmission.. there are even contact lenses you can wear all day and even overnight.

Contact lenses can lead to dry eyes, or make already dry eyes worse - i myself suffer from this, and its pretty problematic for me, but eye drops can aid this - i just put a few eye drops in every hour, and my eyes are generally fine.

So long as you take good care of your lenses, and are scrupulously clean with them, and you also don't wear them for more than their lifetime (dailies, monthlies, etc) you shouldn't get too many problems. Don't be put off by the negatives, as they are pretty rare, and contact lenses are pretty awesome really! :)

  3. Yes, wearing contacts can have side effects. Examine the following list of ill effects of wearing contacts, and try to understand why some of these problems are happening. Once you understand the science (or the process of how these are happening), you will have better control over yourself and stay healthy.

    ------------

For instance, the cells on your corona breath directly by air contact; if someone wears contacts overnight, many of these cell will suffocate, even dies. Hence overnight wearing can be quite dangerous - people can lose sight or develop critical eye conditons as a result.

    ------------

Nevertheless, consult with at least two professionals in optometry and a certified eye-care doctor before making a major medical decision. Ask all the question you have doubts on. It's your life that's being affected, you know, and knowledge makes you stronger.

Complications (excerpted from the Wikipedia article)

Complications due to contact lens wear affect roughly 4% of contact lens wearers each year. Excessive wear of contact lenses, particularly overnight wear, is associated with most of the safety concerns. Problems associated with contact lens wear may affect the eyelid, the conjunctiva, the various layers of the cornea, and even the tear film that covers the outer surface of the eye.

    Eyelid:

    Ptosis

    Conjunctiva:

    Contact dermatitis

    Giant papillary conjunctivitis

    Superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis

    Cornea:

    Epithelium

    Corneal abrasion

    Corneal erosion

    Corneal ulcer

    Hypoxia

    Stroma

    Infection and keratitis
