  1. no, ive had them for 4 years and nothings wrong with them, they just itch sometimes... think about it, would they prescribe if it wasn't safe

  2. Contact lenses have been in use for about one hundred years.  By now, we know a lot about the longterm impacts of its use.

There are some problems that can arise from hard lenses, including fungal infections, eye scratches (as per your friend's uncle), and other smaller effects.  Soft lenses, especially those that are gas-permeable, have far fewer problems associated with them.

However, much depends on your age and your own medical conditions.  I would speak to an ophthalmologist and get an eye exam to see if they are for you.

Finally, anecdotally, I have worn soft contact lenses for 28 years.  As long as I keep them clean (it's much easier than when I first started wearing them), there are no problems.

    Cheers.

  3. they 're safe now a days,  They are much better than they used to be.   I used soft "disposable" ones with heavy duty use, and each pair actually lasted 2 or 3 months, although the official line was to dispose them each week.  The contact lens company was in trouble for selling the same lenses at a higher price saying those ones will last several weeks.  Replace them when they get scummy and won't get clean.   Only problem I ever had was if I took a nap while wearing them, my eyes felt dry when I woke up, had to remove them right away, and eye drops generously.  Before seeing a movie at a movie theatre I had to make sure to re-wet them because one doesn't blink as often in the movie theatre.  Aside from that I'm surprised how well they performed, even better in the wind during high-speed cycling, and skiing, and even swimming.  I never got infection and never got any injury from them.  Make sure to wash your hands before you handle them like putting them on or taking them out.  You'll be ok !

ps- during a camping tip, it might be better to bring glasses if you can't wash with soap and rinse your hands with clean water, because sun screen lotion and rubbing bug repellant is not good to get in your eyes when you have to put them in  or take them out.  Its also wise to carry an extra pair of contacts when travelling out of the country, and to have a pair of glasses in your car just in the extremely rare case of losing your contact lens, at least you'll be able to drive home instead of leaving your car and taking a bus.
