Question:

Are cop cars illegally tinted?

I just bought a new Chevy camaro with dark tinted windows. I haven’t taken it to have the tint tested to see if it’s legal yet but I would say it’s got about the same or less tint as the cop cars around town. I’m wondering if that is an indication that my car is legal or whether cop cars are actually tinted more than the law allows for citizens.

  1. the front passenger windows can only have a uv tint which has no color, it's a clear tint that just blocks some uv rays. mine are tinted at a 35 and limo in the back and i haven't gotten pulled over yet.

  2. Police cars are emergency vehicles owned by the government and are therefore exempt from certain laws automatically. For example-

    - Window tinting

    - License plates

    - Idling time limits

EDIT: To those giving me "thumbs down" check the links below-

    Official Code of Georgia 40-8-73.1:

    http://home.pcisys.net/~bpc/auto_law/tin...

"(b) Except as provided in this Code section, it shall be unlawful for

any person to operate a motor vehicle in this state:

      (1) Which has material and glazing applied or affixed to the front

windshield, which material and glazing when so applied or affixed

reduce light transmission through the windshield; or

      (2) Which has material and glazing applied or affixed to the rear

windshield or the side or door windows, which material and glazing

when so applied or affixed reduce light transmission through the

windshield or window to less than 32 percent, plus or minus 3 percent,

or increase light reflectance to more than 20 percent.

    c) The provisions of subsection (b) of this Code section shall not apply to:

    (7) Any law enforcement vehicle."

"I know what you’re talking about, and a dealer puts the tint on most squads as an extra. Some may have them come from the factory that way, I am not sure about all of them, but it would be exempt from the statute as long as it is used for law enforcement. Once it is sold to a private person the exemption would be invalid and the vehicle would have to conform to all Minnesota State Statutes."

  3. Police cars are not illegally tinted, they are ordered from the factory just like any other vehicle, what purpose would it serve for them to be tinted?

The reason for illegal tinting, is for Law Enforcement safety, when they pull a vehicle over, they want to see how many in vehicle, who is driving, and could their be any weapons visible.

  4. Assets and resources of law enforcement agencies are automatically excluded from many laws and regulations, includingrules about  tinted windows . On the other hand, they have to obey certain laws and regulations specifically aimed at them, such as the Miranda Rule.

  5. Police cars can have things like that since they are used for public safety. The laws don't apply the same, their rifle could have a 12 inch barrel and it wouldn't matter, legally.
