Are cricket and corruption are interlinked?
Corruption is as old as man itself. It has been in practice in every era, in any form and with any ratio. No field of life is immune of this curse. Now cricket has also come under its heinous clutches. Since half a decade, there has been great debate over
match-fixing and spot-fixing, the corrupt practices that have become part and parcel of the game.
The analysts suggest and some bookies have even confessed that there is no cricket match without fixing. Some go to the extreme extent by saying that fixing and cricket are interlinked and have semiotic relationship.
However, the players, the cricket managers, the game organizers and the governing bodies are not ready to accept and admit the fact as they consider it an outrageous controversy against the game.
As a matter of fact, cricket corruption is a by-product of gambling and betting industry that is being owned and operated in most of the countries. However, cricket gambling is legalized in some nations but it being practiced illegally in many others.

The bookies, who invest huge amount of money in betting, resort to purchase players in order to get their interests saved. The puppet players deliberately underperform on the field. This practice is called spot-fixing.
In the match-fixing practice, the team managers or the captains sign henious deals with the rivals to lose games for lucrative benefits.

Some players and some teams were even clearly blamed for this offence. Some bookies even revealed on the media that there was corruption in the mega tournament.
Worse than corruption is the trend of intentional silence and deliberate ignorance from corruption. he who dares to speak against or oppose fixing is fixed himself.

2007.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zulqarnain-Haider-c98685, the former wicketkeeper of Team Pakistan, unveiled some corrupt practices of his national side and of the international cricket a year ago. He and his family had to face death threats. Resultantly, the youngster was forced to pay for this
honesty with the premature cessation of his career.
The former skipper of Team http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758, Tillakartne Hashan who stirred up a new hot debate over cricket corruption a few month back by saying, “Match fixing is not something that started happening yesterday or today. This has been happening since 1992 and
I know all the people who are connected to it. I say this with great responsibility.”
Tillakartne also received death threats but did not succumb to the pressure.
This deplorable state of affairs is detrimental to the progress and promotion of the second most popular sport of the world. If the corruption is not openly condemned and fought, cricket will soon lose its charm and worth. The cricket governing bodies must
device a comprehensive strategy to eliminate this vice and ensure the world that there is cricket without any type of fixing. It is the time to take action.
