Question:

Are deer killers?

A long time ago I heard that if you hit a deer with your car and they are alive on your hood that it's possible that they could kick through the windshield hard enough to kill you. True, or urban legend? Also, we think of deer as being quiet creatures - do they make noises when they are injured, or to communicate?

  1. No they are not, they are lovely creatures.

  2. Deer are normally shy and wary creatures, and would run away rather than kill.

However, if cornered, I am pretty sure they will fight back (I think any animal will). If there's a deer sitting in front of your windshield, I woudn't doubt that they might kick through it and they could definitely kill you if this happened. It doesn't mean that they did it to kill you, though... if they were capable of running away after the hit, they'd probably do it soon. Sometimes when you hit a deer/moose, their legs get swept out from under them and they fall through your windshield and could easily kill you.

So, yes, if there is a deer alive on your hood, they could definitely kill you if they they hit you when they kicked ( plus all that broken windshield all over isn't very nice).

About deer making sound--I don't believe they communicate by sound at all, though I'm not very sure on this (maybe they do make small quiet sounds or lowing sounds). If they ar in pain, I wouldn't doubt that the could make a sound, but I don't know how likely it is that they would.

  3. Not in the homicide sense, but many people die in deer-auto collisions.  Also, during the rut, males fear very little.  Any injured animal is likely to hurt you, not out of hate, but because they hurt.  If your dog is injured, you should tie a strip of cloth around its muzzle before you move it to prevent it from biting you, and your dog loves you (at least I hope).

Deer do indeed bleat, snort, and grunt, and there are calls which duplicate these noises.  The grunt sounds a lot like bad flatulence, so the next time you are in the woods during the rut and you are squatting with your pants around you ankles, look out!

  4. You are more likely to be struck by lightning 10 times than to have a deer kill you by kicking through a windshield. Deer make sounds. They bleat, grunt, and bellow. Most sounds are made during the breeding season.
