  1. Actually, in terms of hand-to-hand combat, there are only 2 distinct forms: Hard and Soft.

HARD: blunt-force trauma based. Typically strength oriented with the goal of subduing an opponent through extreme concussionary pressure to the brain.

SOFT: Typically leverage based with the goal of soft target attacks, controlling an attacker, and joint manipulation.

Other than these two main styles, most arts are generally the same, though they differ in philosophy, training and form.

A straight punch, is a straight punch, is a straight punch whether it is from karate, muay thai or boxing - though with the different forms and philosophies, karate's punch may be from the hip, while boxing is from the shoulders, but the end result is the same - a fist in your face. TKD is just a korean form of Karate. Karate is basically a Japanese version of Kung Fu. Jujitsu is basically a form of Chinese Chin Na, and so on, and so forth.

A hip throw, is a hip throw, is a hip throw whether in Judo, Sambo or chinese shuai chiao.

When people get into the argument of "what art is better" what they are REALLY referring to, whether they know it or not, is "what training methods are better" and whether "hard or soft" arts are better.

  2. Yes! Although all martial arts usually employ the standard kick, punch, chop, hammerfist, hip toss, submission, pressure point, blah blah ect. Its HOW those arts employ those movements is makes them so unique

For example. A kyokushin guy would probably punch with a strong foreward punch, having very tensed and powerful muscles. While a boxer or Wing chun artist may have a "looser" shoulder and have more relaxed punches. A wing chun guy might try to deflect a punch then counter with a backfist, while a Muay thai man might clinch you and emply a knee strike.

I remember grappling with this guy who unlike any other grappler. He was a black belt in BJJ and was highly skilled in Tai chi ( the combat type), I had a rough time with him! What makes a style unique isnt WHAT they do so much, its HOW they do it.

  3. Basically you have two types:

    Empty Hand and

    Weapons.

There is a wide diversity when it comes to weapons.

Most martial arts teach you that just about anything can be used as a weapon.

  4. yes and no. we must understand these are no religions or anything these are simply ways to get the same fighting ability

    diverseities

karate is based on striking an blocking

so is some fornms of kung fu but alot of kung fu slid there feet while karatekas step

steping will give more power but sliding is more fluid

then trhere is judo whick is completly different as it is fighting with throws joint locks and athleticism  so that is nuttin like karate and kung fu in that manner but brizilian jujitsu is like judo but they spend more time not workin on take downs and instead wrking on joint locks and fighting off ur bak then japanese jujitsyu is judo with some more deadly moves and some kicking and punching ability .........sambo has a bit of a mix of other movements and tae kon do has the same as karate except they slide their feet and try making distance for kicking. krav ,maga usualy fights from one position but in boxing wrestling or pankration they use footwork to move the battale around.aikido uses attackers force while some ninjitsu sneaks up on the attacker and kills him

styles can also be different in philosophy

    aikido is about peace

karate and tang soo do about courage

    ninjitsu about stealth

kickboxing avbout aggresiveness and some counteraggresivness

but then they arent so differenrt because a judo man has the ability to punch and the karate man has the ability to slide  hois feeet or chocke some1 out so then they may all be working on certain areas but they will allbe able to some degree do erything

thaT is wat jeet kune do is about

    the style without a style

they say u can do anythin but u maybe better at the area u practice and all styles help u find  out about urself so they are all doin the same thing

the truth is a kicck is just a kick a punch is just a punch and although the path is different the goal is similar

  5. Asking this is the same as asking if different religions are that diverse. The titles of "martial arts" and "religions" cover the continuum of those subjects, but there is a tremendous amount of diversity in both.
