I run varsity Cross Country, I will be a sohpmore next year.

I've been doing pull ups (I can do around 5 at a time, I know it's weak..but its' better than any other girls I know)

I've been running about 3 miles a night, and in between 1 mile marks I do some pull ups.

What is good to condition, and are doing pull ups good for this sport?

  1. Pull ups(chin ups) will keep your arms strong...work on your core by doing pull ups and then lift your legs, like your the letter L (hold them together) and hold for 5 seconds and repeat 5X, jump rope, skipping as fast as you can for 30 seconds, rest 30 and repeat 3X (good for your cadence), stand against the wall, feet hips wide apart and about 2 1/2 feet away from the wall and make sure your back and shoulder firmly on the wall, slide down as if your sitting in an invisible chair and hold for 1 minute, rest 1minute and repeat 3X, cycling as cross training will help your with your endurance.

Keep up with your running, your doing awesome!

  2. Pull-ups work a large number of muscles in your back, shoulders, and arms at the same time. The bicep muscles in your arms do most of the work. It is a great overall exercise for building upper body strength as it requires the work of several muscle groups at once.

Will pull-ups help you run faster in cross-country? Probably not. Pull-ups would certainly benefit those participating in sports requiring explosive pulling power like rowing and rock climbing.

Additional explosive pulling strength in the arms (the primary muscle built by standard pull-ups) is not required or useful in long-distance running.

I would recommend that you not interrupt your evening runs with pull-ups. If your goal is to improve your running focus all of your energy on running.

    Try this out:

Practice running hills and pumping your arms to help propel yourself forward. You will use your arms of course but I am certain that you will find that your legs and cardiovascular system will scream "UNCLE!" a lot faster than your arms.

Run to get better at running. Do pull-ups to get better at pull-ups. OK?

    Have fun and run fast.

  3. pull ups are good you need upper body to to run
