Yes they are, as long as there no door in them.  They say it is unsafe, because the door can swing from the shaking and hit you or pinch your fingers or something.

but if there's no door in it, like the entryway to a hallway or something, then yeah, its safe

Yes they are. Why when earthquakes occur depending on the magnitude your house may collapse due to the way the door jamb is built it can withstand and not collapse for several hours so yes it is safe.
